If you live in Hayward, you already know summer here has a rhythm. Third Thursdays. Farmers market. A few blocks that go quiet on Mondays and get loud on Fridays. What you might not have noticed, because it happened one storefront at a time, is that B Street between Main and Watkins has quietly restacked itself. A handful of the places you passed last summer are gone. Different names are in the windows. And the biggest single addition, a 1990s BART car parked next to a pizza oven, is still a couple of months from opening.
This post is a local's read on what that adds up to right now, in the middle of July 2026, with one Downtown Street Party in the rearview and one still to come.
The One Intersection That Explains This Summer
Almost everything worth doing in Hayward this summer sits within a five minute walk of B and Main. That is not an accident. The city's Downtown Hayward Street Parties fan out from that intersection, and the new restaurant class of the last twelve months has clustered inside the same three blocks. If you were designing a summer around walking distance, the map would draw itself.
The reason to point this out: most Hayward residents still route around downtown for dinner out of habit, driving to Southland or over to Castro Valley. The strip they are skipping is not the one they remember.
The New B Street, In The Order You'll Pass Them
Here is what has actually changed on the ground, working from what was reported by the Downtown Hayward Improvement Association and the local trade press over the last year:
- Storybook took over the old Pizza House space with a California Mediterranean menu. It is the most obvious tenant swap on the block.
- Obento brought Japanese-style bento boxes built around protein, rice, and seasonal sides. Fast-casual, aimed at the lunch crowd but staying open into the evening.
- Con Azúcar Café opened as a coffee shop rooted in Mexican café culture, adding a morning anchor the block was missing.
- Tang Jip, a Korean spot, opened for business on August 19 of last year and has held its own through a full calendar cycle.
- Arthur Mac's Big Snack, the anchor still to come, is the reason to keep reading.
That is four new operators plus one anticipated opening, all inside walking distance of each other. For a downtown this size, that is a meaningful turnover.
The Third Thursday Rhythm You Can Still Catch
The Downtown Hayward Summer Street Parties run the third Thursday of June, July, and August from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., organized by the Hayward Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Hayward Area Recreation and Parks District. The Chamber has called them a tradition of more than thirty years, and this summer's edition kicked off at B and Main on June 18.

If you have only ever done one Street Party a summer, August is the one to circle. It lands after the newest B Street tenants have had a full summer to sort out their kitchens, which means the food vendor lineup and the walk-in dining rooms are running the same shift for the first time.
The BART Car On 1060 B Street
This is the piece of downtown news most Hayward residents have heard about secondhand and gotten slightly wrong. Here is the actual shape of it.
Arthur Mac's Big Snack, a pizza-and-arcade concept with existing locations in Oakland and Emeryville, is opening its third and largest outpost at 1060 B Street. The centerpiece is a restored 1990s Class A BART train car that has been converted into a dining compartment, with a full-service cocktail bar in the garden alongside it. Owners Joel and Jordan DiGeorgio secured the car through BART's legacy fleet program, which is now down to a single remaining car available for donation, according to KTVU. The relocation and restoration took four years to pull off, and the cost of the move pushed the owners to put their original Oakland location up for sale.
The Hayward opening is slated for fall, not this summer. Two things worth knowing before then. First, the menu is brick-oven pizza, wings, double-fried fries, plus gluten-free and vegan slices. Second, the BART car interior is being built out with a retro arcade and a kids' play area, which reframes it from a novelty dining room into something families can actually use on a weekend afternoon.
For a downtown that has been trying to add nighttime foot traffic for a decade, dropping a destination restaurant with an arcade at 1060 B is a bigger deal than another good taco shop would have been.
Two Things Locals Are Getting Wrong This Summer
The FIFA World Cup 26 watch parties are not downtown. HARD is rolling its large LED screen into neighborhood parks. The USA vs. Paraguay group-stage match on June 12 was screened at Eden Shores Park at 2841 Seahaven Court, not on B Street, per the city's June announcement. If you want the tournament and the Street Party in the same trip, plan on driving between them.
Hayward's Juneteenth Celebration moved this year. The June 20 event ran at a new location, per the city's own announcement. If you skipped it because you assumed it was in the same spot as last year, that is worth checking before June 2027.
Small point, same lesson: the downtown calendar has been reshuffled enough that the muscle memory from two summers ago will lead you to the wrong block.
What's Still On The Calendar Between Now And Labor Day
Beyond the August 20 Street Party, a few things are still on the July and August boards worth knowing about:
- The Douglas Morrisson Theatre has been running its Spotlight Live! Summer Showcase, an easy indoor option on a hot Saturday.
- Chalkfest at 20478 Mission Blvd on July 18 was free and family-oriented, which suggests the same organizers may repeat something similar before the summer ends. Worth watching the city's community calendar.
- The Bistro on B Street has continued to program live music nights through the summer, including its Decoto Jam series. It is the closest thing downtown has to a walk-in music venue on a Saturday.
One Date To Put On The Calendar For January
If you are the kind of Hayward resident who tries a new restaurant when someone hands you a reason, mark January. The city's Economic Development Division is running the third annual Hayward Restaurant Month in January 2026, again in partnership with Yelp for an in-app map of participating restaurants and specials, per the city's December announcement. Last year's participant list included Acqua e Farina, Susie Q's Pizza, The Old City Roastery, Snappy's Cafe, Rockit Char Grill, and Habibi's Birria, among others. Assuming the January 2027 edition follows the same pattern, it is the cheapest way to work through half the B Street changes in a single month.
What This Adds Up To
Downtown Hayward is in the middle of a compositional change most residents have not fully clocked because it happened one lease at a time. Storybook replaced Pizza House. Obento, Con Azúcar Café, and Tang Jip filled in around it. Arthur Mac's is about to land at 1060 B with a BART car in the yard. The Street Parties, the Farmers Market, and the Bistro's music nights are all pointed at the same three blocks. If your last walk down B Street was during the pandemic or the year after, the strip you remember is not the strip that is there now.
The practical version of this thesis: pick a Thursday in August, park near the library, walk B Street from Main to Watkins, and eat at two places you have never tried. You will have a more complete read on your own downtown than most of your neighbors do.
